Report by Melissa Morales The final event for ClarinetFest® 2016 took place on Sunday, August 7 at 3 p.m. in the Crafton-Preyer Theatre. The Festival Clarinet Choir was comprised of 35 members and was led by conductor Raphael Sanders. The choir opened with Claribel (2000) by Roland Cardon. They played with a full, lush sound and brought the melodies to life, accentuating the fun and comical character. Report by Melissa Morales The final evening concert for ClarinetFest® 2016 took place Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. in the Kansas Lied Center Auditorium. The concert was hosted by Buffet Crampon, one of the festival's platinum sponsors. Report by Melissa Morales and Rachel Yoder At 7:30 p.m. on August 6, the ICA Awards Ceremony was held at the Lied Center of Kansas. President Caroline Hartig began by thanking ClarinetFest® Artistic Directors Bob Walzel and Stephanie Zelnick for their work in organizing the festival. A moment of silence was held for clarinetists that had passed on in the past year. Report by Lisa Kachouee Dr. Jonathan Guist, Associate Professor of Clarinet, led the University of Texas Rio Grande, Brownsville Clarinet Ensemble at 10:30 a.m., Sunday, August 7, in Crafton-Preyer Theatre. Reflecting his commitment to new music and expanding the clarinet choir repertoire, Guist programmed two works by young composers. The first piece, new(er) counterpoint, was composed by UTRGB student Mathew Campbell. Profoundly affected and inspired by the music of Steve Reich, Campbell originally composed new counterpoint for flute choir in 2012. Report by Emily G. Kerski  Sunday morning opened at 9 a.m. with a unique concert in Swarthout Recital Hall celebrating the recent clarinet works of James M. David, professor of composition at Colorado State University. David was joined by his CSU colleagues and other Colorado-based clarinetists who performed four of his solo and chamber pieces. This was David's seventh ClarinetFest® appearance. Kerski  Dalcroze expert and Yamaha artist Dr. Lori Baruth presented a master class titled "How to Incorporate Dalcroze Eurhythmics Into Your Practice and Studio Teaching" at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in the Inge Memorial Theatre. This interactive class gave attendees a taste of the Dalcroze music education method, which focused on an integration of physical, cognitive and creative processes. ClarinetFest® 2016, Day 4: “Clarinet Alone”

Report by Emily G. Kerski On Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., the opening recital, "Clarinet Alone," explored repertoire for the unaccompanied clarinet. The recital took place in Swarthout Recital Hall and featured six performers presenting pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries. Jonathan Guist opened the program with an assured performance of Samuel Robles' mysterious Fantasia for Clarinet in A. Amanda McCandless then took the stage to perform Theresa Martin's Light and Shadows. McCandless, an avid performer and researcher of unaccompanied clarinet music by women, gave an excellent introduction to the piece and acknowledged Martin's presence in the audience that morning. ClarinetFest® 2016, Day 3: Astor Piazzolla and the Evolution of Tango

Kerski The dynamic 4REEDS Ensemble, comprised of clarinetists Meghan Merciers, Nikolasa Tejero, Brian Viliunas and bass clarinetist Nicholas Hartline, presented a lecture-recital about Piazzolla's tango repertoire on Friday, August 5 at 4:30 p.m. in Spahr Auditorium. The clarinet quartet gave a stylish performance of two iconic Piazzolla works: Histoire du Tango and Oblivion, both published in the late 1980s. The performances presented a thorough explanation of the musical ingredients of Piazzolla's tango and its development as a genre from 1900 to the present day. The ensemble performed the Bruce Edwards adaptation of the saxophone quartet version of Histoire and the Jeremy Eig arrangement of Oblivion. Histoire can be performed on a variety of different clarinets, but 4REEDS selected the... read more →
