I.C.A. 2012 Research Competition Report

The annual I.C.A. Research Competition finals took place on August 1, 2012, in the Westbrook Recital Hall at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. The six presentations were all excellent and presented judges Jane Ellsworth (Eastern Washington University), Gregory Barrett (Northern Illinois University) and Jennifer Laubenthal (Eastern New Mexico State University) with difficult choices: Thomas Emmanuel Carroll, “An Acoustic Comparison of the Basset Horns of Vienna and Germany, ca. 1800;” Jaren S. Hinckley, “Constantin Stanislavski’s ‘Magic If’ as Applied to Music Performance and Pedagogy;” Wen-Mi Chen, “An Innovative Approach to the Sonata Form in Carl Maria von Weber’s Clarinet Concertos;” Lori Baruth, “Joan Tower and the Clarinet: An Examination of Her Compositional Style and a Performer’s Guide to Rain Waves (1997) and A Gift (2007);” Sarah Burk Dye, “Erklartet Klarinet;” Stefanie Harger Gardner, “An Investigation of Finger Motion and Hand Posture During Clarinet Performance.”

The first-place winner was Stefanie Harger Gardner. She won a cash prize of $1,000.00 and the opportunity to publish her findings in The Clarinet. The second-place winner was Thomas Carroll. He won a cash prize of $500.00. Special thanks to all who submitted research projects, to the judges listed above who served as preliminary and finals judges, and to the additional three judges who helped adjudicate the preliminary round, Kelly Burke, Mary Kantor and Luigi Magistrelli.
